Brock Vradenburg homers twice, drives in five in Beloit Sky Carp's victory

BELOIT — First baseman Brock Vradenburg helped break open a close 3-2 game with the Peoria Chiefs, blasting his second two-run home run of the game in a three-run eighth inning that propelled the Beloit Sky Carp to a 6-2 victory at ABC Supply Stadium on Thursday night.

The first two Beloit batters were retired in the eighth inning by reliever Hunter Hayes, but Wilfredo Lara tripled to right field and scored on a single by Yiddi Cappe. Vradenburg then deposited his fourth homer of the season over the right field fence to make it 6-2.

Beloit starting pitcher Thomas White (4-3) picked up the victory, allowing two hits and one run over five innings to dip his season earned run average to 2.37. He walked four and struck out seven.

Reliever Josh Ekness worked the next two scoreless and hitless innings, fanning three and Josh White collected his sixth save, allowing one run and two hits in his two innings. He also fanned a pair to give the Beloit trio 12 strikeouts for the game. They allowed only four hits.

Vradenburg led Beloit’s 14-hit attack, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two homers, a double, two runs scored and five RBIs. Colby Shade was 3-for-4 and Lara and Cappe also had two hits apiece.

Vradenburg hammered his first home run in the second inning with Cappe aboard to give Beloit a 2-0 lead against Peoria starter Hancel Rincon (8-7). Cappe had walked.

Peoria’s Chase Davis cut the lead in half with a homer in the fourth, but Vradenburg’s double knocked in Lara in the sixth to make it 3-1. Lara had singled and moved into scoring position on a base hit by Cappe, who was out at second trying to stretch the single into a double.

The Chiefs closed to within 3-2 in the eighth, but Vradenburg and Co. went back to work in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams played errorless baseball on the second E.R.A.s Night at the stadium, saluting Taylor Swift. The game drew 2,185 fans and they were treated to a postgame fireworks show.

    • UP NEXT: The teams meet again at 6:35 p.m. on Friday with the Sky Carp leading the series 2-1. The home schedule winds up with another 6:35 p.m. start on Saturday and then a 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday.
