    SoBos post romp over AFC

SOUTH BELOIT — It is perhaps a telling sign of just how far the South Beloit football team has come when the SoBos’ 35-14 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center Friday night can be considered a disappointment of sorts.

It wasn’t so long ago that any victory, over any time, was a cause for celebration in SoBo land.

Not so now, where the team’s bar has been raised under coach Josh Redieske. The first-year head man was a bit disturbed by his team’s output against an AFC squad that had struggled mightily thus far.

“It was just a really sloppy game for us overall,” Redieske said. “We’ve had some games like that this year. I really fell like if we don’t drop a few key passes in that first half, this could have been a blowout early on.”

The Pirates had their share of struggles coming in, with a record of 0-4 and losses of 80-8 and 50-0 on their ledger.

Is it possible the SoBos, now a stellar 4-1, could have been looking past AFC?

“I’d hate to think our team is looking past anyone,” Redieske said. “But these are young kids, and it’s definitely possible it could have happened. We’ve just had struggles at times getting off to slow starts, and tonight was definitely one of those times.”

The Pirates took the opening kickoff and went right down the field, scoring on a short touchdown pass midway through the first quarter.

After that, however, the SoBos defense anchored down, and even scored some points on their own.

Kaden Cook, intercepted a pass on a fake punt attempt and took it to the house in the second quarter to give the SoBos the lead.

“He just does so much for us all over the field,” Redieske said. “That’s his sixth or seventh interception on the season, and two of them hae gone back for a touchdown.”

Quarterback Landen Reed completed four passes for 68 yards while running the offense efficiently.

Reed feels as though the squad is coming together as postseason time gets closer and closer.

“We defintely didn’t play as well as we could have,” Reed said. “But it was nice to be able to get a win like that even though we weren’t at our best. We’ve talked a little bit about playoffs, but mostly we’ve been focusing on how to get better every game.”

Trudane Peterson continued his strong season, finishing the contest with 24 yards rushing and a touchdown to go along with eight tackles on the defensive side before leaving the game with an injury in the second half.

Chase Harrington played his sparkplug role to perfection, carrying the ball seven times for 55 yards and a score, while Daniel Winterland filled in effectively for Peterson, carrying it 58 yards in five carries, including a 51-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The SoBos will continue their quest for the playoffs when they travel to 2-3 Alden-Hebron Friday night.
