    Beloit College soccer teams split on visit to Cornell College

    MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Beloit College’s women’s soccer team opened Midwest Conference play Saturday with a 4-1 victory over host Cornell College.

    The Buccaneers (2-7-2, 1-0-0) scored early, taking a 1-0 lead a minute and 39 seconds into the contest on a goal by Abigail Membrino.

    Two minutes later, Megan Thompson put Beloit ahead 2-0 with Natalie Ortiz picking up the assist. Five minutes into the second half, Ortiz scored to make it 3-0.

    Freshman Willow Mashkuri scored late in the game for her first goal of her collegiate career.

    The Buccaneers were highly efficient in their shooting this afternoon, firing off 12 shots, 10 on goal and scoring four.

    Winning goalie Maya Betzler had two saves as Cornell (1-8-0, 0-1-0) managed only three shots on goal.

    The Bucs are off until Oct. 5 when they host Monmouth at 1:30 p.m. at the Strong Complex Soccer Field.

    • MEN’S SOCCER: CORNELL 3, BELOIT 0: The visiting Bucs (1-9-0, 0-1 MWC) allowed two goals in each half against the Rams (3-5-0, 1-0-0 MWC).

    Beloit has 12 shots, five on goal, but were held scoreless.

    Bucs goalie David Staats had five saves.

    The Bucs play at UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday.
