35-second shot clock coming to IHSA for 2026-27 high school season
ROCKTON — It’s still two seasons out, but a 35-second shot clock is definitely being adopted by the Illinois High School Association. It will come with no trepidation from Hononegah girls basketball head coach Jason Brunke, whose team isn’t shy about launching shots and figures it could help on the defensive end when it becomes official in 2026. “I’ve actually been for it because I think it will keep the...

Beloit Sky Carp hope to get back on track with six-game road trip against River Bandits
DAVENPORT, Iowa — Right now in the Midwest League West standings, it feels a lot like the Wisconsin Timber Rattler, the Cedar Rapids Kernels and then everybody else. The Timber Rattlers sit in first place at 36-21 and have a 3.5 game lead over the second-place Kernels (32-24). But Wisconsin has a comfortable 10-lead on the third-place South Bend Cubs, who are 26-31. The Sky Carp are right there with...
Retiring Beloit Memorial baseball coach Steven Johnson hopes numbers increase
BELOIT — It wasn’t quite the renaissance of Beloit Memorial High School baseball Steve Johnson hoped for when he took over as head coach a year ago. 2023 only brought one more victory the Purple Knights’ way as they improved from 2-20 to 3-19. This past spring, they finished 2-16. Not quite the return to glory days the 67-year-old Johnson experienced when he played on a 1973 Beloit team that...

In game one, Carter Middleton was stout from the mound for Beloit as he allowed just two earned runs, both in the bottom of the...
WIAA STATE SOFTBALL: Milton ends Kaukauna's streak, falls to Kenosha Bradford in final
MADISON — It was a wild weekend for the Milton softball team as the Red Hawks stopped one of the most impressive winning streaks in the country to advance to the WIAA Division 1 state finals before ultimately falling short. Milton pulled off a stunning 5-3 upset over Kaukauna, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, which had won 108 consecutive games and each of the past three WIAA Division 1 state championships, before falling to Kenosha Bradford 9-3. ...
Beloit Sky Carp bats go quiet in 5-3 loss to Lake County Captains in series finale
BELOIT — Beloit Sky Carp manager Billy Gardner Jr. and catcher Sam Praytor were in agreement: starter Trenton Denholm and the Lake County Captains’ bullpen were good, but not shut-down-your-lineup good. Yet that’s exactly what Denholm and relievers Zach Jacobs and Allan Hernandez did as the trio combined to allow just two hits and four walks while striking out 13 in the Captains’ 5-3 win over the Sky Carp in front of a crowd of 1,107 at a warm and sunny ABC Supply Stadium on...
Brodhead falls in WIAA Division 3 state semifinals with 4-1 loss to Prescott
MADISON, Wis. — Once it is state tournament time, a single hit could mean the difference between a championship title or an end to your season. No squad understands that better than the Brodhead softball team, which won last season’s WIAA Division 3 state championship off Jerrica Schwartz’s walk-off RBI double in the eighth inning. And the Cardinals’ run at repeating the title this year effectively ended off Prescott’s Megan...

Jake DeLeo hits go-ahead homer as Beloit Sky Carp open series with 4-3 win
BELOIT — Beloit Sky Carp left fielder Jake DeLeo had seen enough. DeLeo had watched Guy Lipscomb triple to start off the seventh and score an out later on Jonah Advincula’s groundout to second base to break a 2-all tie and put the Lake County Captains in position to open the six-game series with a victory. So in the bottom of the eighth, following a leadoff single from Tony Bullard...
COLUMN: Guy Ritchie enjoys reminiscing about Turner, 'Battle of Beloit'
BELOIT — With apologies to Thomas Wolfe, why can’t you go home again? For over 20 years of his life, 88-year-old Guy Ritchie called Beloit home and for 16 of those he was a physical education instructor and head boys basketball coach at Beloit Turner. While he now lives in Henderson, Nevada, on Wednesday afternoon, Ritchie did “go home” and spent several hours at The Rock Bar & Grill reminiscing...
