    Beloit College's women's basketball team pulls off upset while men just upset

    BELOIT — Beloit College’s women’s basketball team put up 27 points in the third quarter on its way to 65-57 victory over visiting Cornell College Saturday at Flood Arena.

    The Buccaneers (8-13, 6-7 MWC) had scored only seven points in the second quarter and trailed 23-21 at halftime.

    The lead went back-and-forth in the third quarter with the visiting Rams (8-13, 6-6 MWC) taking their last advantage at 40-39 on a pair of free throws by Kali March.

    Beloit went back on top for good at 41-40 on a layup by Hailey Johnson with 1:30 left in the third quarter. The Bucs made it 48-42 by the end of the quarter as Marlee Young scored on a layup, Hailey Johnson hit a 3-pointer and Elizabeth Kalk added a layup with six seconds left.

    Cornell got as close as three points in the fourth quarter, but the Bucs were able to close out the win.

    The Bucs scored 28 points in the paint compared to just 14 from the Rams.

    Kalk and Johnson each had 19 points to lead Beloit. Kalk added eight rebounds, five assists and a steal. Johnson pulled down five rebounds. Hannah Welte had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.

    The Bucs host Mt. Mary at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

    • MEN: CORNELL 71, BELOIT 61: A rough shooting day proved Beloit’s undoing in a loss to visiting Cornell College Saturday at Flood Arena.

    The Buccaneers never led as they slipped to 7-6 in Midwest Conference men’s basketball and 13-8 overall. Cornell improved to 4-8 in the MWC and 7-14 overall.

    Beloit converted just 35.6 percent of its shots (16-45), including just 27.3 (6-22) on 3-pointers. The Rams hit at a 43.5 clip on 3-pointers (10-23).

    Semaj Roy paced the Bucs with 16 points and five rebounds while Azeez Ganiyu had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He also had five assists and two steals. The third Buc to hit double figures in scoring was Anthony Carter with 10 points.

    Zach Ingle led Cornell with 17 points, converting five 3-pointers. Nate Jacobson had four treys and 16 points.l

    The Bucs will look to bounce back in a non-conference matchup against Maranatha Baptist in Watertown, Wis., on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
