BELOIT—The Beloit College women’s basketball team kept their Midwest Conference tournament hopes alive with a solid 84-71 upset win over second-place Knox College on Saturday.

It was the first time in program history that the Buccaneers earned a season sweep over the Prairie Fire, and the win improved Beloit to 10-13, which is their most victories in a season since they finished 10-13 in the 2009-10 season.

Knox controlled play in the paint through the first quarter to jump out to a 23-14 lead but a layup from Marlee Young and three points from the free-throw line from Elizabeth Kalk cut it to 23-19 after one.

A three-point play from Kaitlin Davis gave Beloit a 28-27 lead as the Bucs held a 40-36 lead at halftime. Hannah Welte scored six points out of the break and a jumper from Hailey Johnson helped put Beloit back in front 48-47.

Ahead 56-53 heading into the final frame, Knox took a brief 58-57 lead but Kalk answered with a layup and scored eight points while Johnson added six as the Bucs outscored the Prairie Fire 26-18 to pull away for the win.

Johnson paced Beloit with 21 points in just 25 minutes off of the bench while Welte was next with 19 while adding eight boards. Kalk scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and Davis added a nice statline with 10 points, five assists and eight rebounds.

Nyah Daniels scored 25 points for Knox while Bria Medina added 13.

Beloit finished 26-for-29 from the free-throw line and limited Knox to 30.5% (25-for-82) shooting from the floor.

The Bucs are 7-7 in conference play and are in sixth place behind 8-7 Lawrence and 8-6 Grinnell, which Beloit will face at home on Wednesday in a pivotal battle for the fourth and final spot in the tourney.
