Beloit College softball opens Florida trip with loss to Macalester

LEESBURG, Fla. — The Beloit College softball team was welcomed on its spring break trip to Florida with more than just the southern heat.

The Buccaneers were also greeted with the hot-hitting bats of Macalester College, which defeated Beloit 8-2 in seven innings in the opening match of the Spring Games on Sunday evening.

The Scots’ Sophie Futchko drew a one-out walk in the top of the first before opening the scoring after reaching home on Elizabeth Welch’s double to left.

Macalester plated two in the third after Futchko walked yet again, Welch singled and Mandy Morrical brought both home with her single up the middle.

The Bucs cut it to 3-2 after Kaylee Witte, who had opened the bottom of the sixth with a single, scored on Kara Jensen’s wild pitch. Angela Donath then scored Isabel Johnson with a single to left field.

But it all fell apart for Beloit in the seventh as the Scots poured on five runs. Morrical smacked a one-run infield single, Elsa Church ripped a two-run triple to right-center and Callia Holland capped it off with a two-run homer to right-center.

Welch paced the Scots with three hits while Donath and Siddalee each recorded two for Beloit.

Helena Harrison took her second loss of the season after allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. Kaylee Witte went four innings and allowed five earned runs.

Tess Bojorquez earned the win for Macalester as she went four innings and allowed just three hits and no runs.

The Bucs are back in action on Monday at 9:15 a.m. against The College of Wooster.
