KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Beloit College’s softball team, matched Simpson College in hits in its first game Wednesday and outhit Bowdoin College in its second.

But the 17 total hits produced only three runs as the Buccaneers fell to Simpson 9-1 and to Bowdoin 7-2.

It didn’t help that the Beloit pitchers issued seven bases on balls against Simpson and five more and a hit batsman against Bowdoin.

The Bucs dipped to 0-6 in The Spring Games in Florida and 1-7 overall.

Beloit matched Simpson with six hits, but stranded seven baserunners.

The Bucs did score first in the top of the third inning. Jocelyn Jordan led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Briana Arteaga. Hannah Beran pinch-ran and scored on a double by Angela Donath.

Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run and enjoyed an eight-run fifth inning. The Bucs couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning and the game ended by the eight-run rule.

Donath was 2-for-2 for Beloit and was also hit by a pitch. Jordan and Rachel Overocker also had two hits apiece.

Kaylee Witte started for the Bucs and went 3 1-3 innings, allowing three hits and four earned runs. She walked five and struck out two. Helena Harrison took the loss, allowing five runs, but just one earned in 2-3 of an innings. She gave up three hits and walked two.

In game two, the Bucs outhit Bowdoin 9-8, but four errors were really their undoing.

Samantha Friedrichsohn started for Beloit (0-2) and worked 3 1-3 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and three walks and two strikeouts. Witte came on in relief and allowed three hits and two runs (none earned) over 3 2-3 innings. She walked two.

Both teams scored in the first inning. Jordan singled and was again bunted over by Arteaga. Rachel Overocker and Siddalee Meyers hit back-to-back singles to score her, but they were left stranded.

Bowdoin picked up four runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth.

    • UP NEXT: The Bucs return to action Thursday when they face Ohio Northern University at 4 p.m. and University of Northwestern (MN) at 7 p.m.. Both games will be played at the Legends Way Fields in Clermont, Fla.
