    COLLEGE UPDATE: Jackson Burk collects first save at UW-Whitewater

    Former Beloit Turner standout Jackson Burk collected UW-Whitewater’s first save of the season March 14 when he pitched 2 1-3 innings in a 5-2 victory over 11th-ranked Birmingham-Southern in the nightcap of a double-header in Pensacola, Fla.

    Burk came on in the seventh inning and struck out the final batter. The 6-foot-1 sophomore also pitched a scoreless eighth inning and had two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth.

    The Warhawks’ starter, Jack Hagen, picked up the win, allowing two runs over the first 6 2-3 innings with six strikeouts.

    UW-W won the first game 14-3. The Warhawks then defeated Sewanee 6-1 and finished off their Florida trip with a 17-2 rout of Huntingdon College. All the games were played at the Blue Wahoos’ minor-league stadium. Quint Studer is owner of both the Wahoos and the Beloit Sky Carp.

    Overall, Burk has pitched in three games covering 4 1-3 innings. He has allowed only two hits and one run for a 2.08 earned run average. He has walked two and struck out five and opposing batters are hitting .143 off him.

    Brodhead graduate Brady Malkow has only pitched 1-3 of an inning so far, allowing no hits and no runs.

    • RIES ROLLING: Junior third baseman Drew Ries (Turner) is hitting .368 for 5-3 UW-Stout’s baseball team.

    In a 9-1 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, the 6-foot junior was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Overall, he has seven hits in 19 at-bats, including three doubles. He has knocked in three runs with a .526 slugging percent and .478 on-base percentage.

    Stout is off until Friday when it travels to Carol Stream, Ill, to play Wheaton College.

    • GOLDEN EAGLES: Rock Valley College’s baseball team (11-7) took a four-game winning streak into a double-header against Milwaukee Area Technical College on Tuesday.

    Konner Giddley (Turner) is hitting .326 for the Golden Eagles. He has played in 16 games and has 15 hits in 46 at-bats. He has scored 14 runs and knocked in four more.

    RVC’s softball team is 5-10, but has won its past two games. Outfielder Briella Sendele (Hononegah) is hitting .220 with one home run, nine runs scored, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

    Trinity Mesch (South Beloit) and Paige Hendricks (Clinton) are also on the RVC roster.
