BELOIT — The Beloit College softball team had a pair of excellent offensive outings as it split a doubleheader on Friday before its bats went cold in a pair of Midwest Conference games on both Saturday and Sunday as it finished the weekend 1-5.

Beloit is now 3-19 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

On Sunday, the Bucs fell 7-1 in their first game to visiting Grinnell College and 9-2 in the nightcap.

Isabel Johnson’s RBI double in the second was the only scoring Beloit could manage during game one. The Bucs managed just four hits by four different batters and committed four errors.

Kaylee Witte fell to 1-6 as she allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and five walks in five innings. Helena Harrison allowed a hit and one unearned run in two innings as the Pioneers scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Grinnell (12-12, 2-2 MWC) poured on four runs in the fifth and five in the seventh as they racked up 10 hits in game two on Sunday. Briana Arteaga had a team-high two hits for the Bucs, who got an RBI single and fielder’s choice from Stella Lutes.

Harrison allowed four earned runs on five hits in five innings while Witte allowed five earned runs on five hits in two.

    • SATURDAY: Beloit fell 4-1, 2-0 in a duo of close games with Cornell College.

In game one, the Bucs got on the board first in the fourth when Witte scored Arteaga on a groundout. But the Rams scored two in both the fifth and sixth to escape with the close win.

Angela Donath had two of Beloit’s three hits while Witte threw all seven innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks.

In Saturday’s nightcap, the Bucs racked up five hits but couldn’t get any of those home. Parkview graduate Siddalee Meyers had two hits.

Cornell (8-5, 2-0) had a one-run single in the first and an RBI triple in the third to eek out the win. Samantha Friedrichsohn took the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Harrison threw two scoreless innings with just two hits.

    • FRIDAY: The Bucs split with the Mount Mary Blue Angels in their non-conference home opener. Beloit lost the first game 9-7, but bounced back to win the nightcap 9-6, to snap an eight-game losing streak.

In the nightcap, the Bucs rallied from a 4-0 deficit, scoring five times in the bottom of the second inning and tacking on three more in the third. Lylah Murrah, Arteaga and SMeyers all had two hits to lead Beloit’s 11-hit attack. Witte and Lutes both hit doubles. Friedrichsohn picked up the win, allowing 11 hits and six runs in five innings. Helena Harrison pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

The Bucs were outhit 10-8 in the first game and fell behind 9-1 before rallying for six runs in their final three at-bats to make it close. Rachel Overocker smacked a home run and a double, scored a run and knocked in three to lead the Bucs. Murrah and Jocelyn Jordan also had two hits apiece, each collecting a double.

Witte took the loss, allowing 10 hits and nine runs (six earned) in seven innings. She walked seven and struck out three.
