BELOIT—Beloit College track and field coach Brian Bliese went into Saturday’s Beloit Relays excited about the potential his athletes possessed after a great showing at the Private College Championships the weekend before.

The 24th-year head coach has to be feeling even more jovial after his Buccaneers went out and notched a slew of strong finishes on a sunny and warm day at Strong Stadium Complex in Beloit’s lone home meet of the season.

The Bucs’ men placed second as a team with 134 points while the women were fourth with 90. St. Norbert swept the titles with the men placing first with 212 points and the women snatching the top spot with 189.

Alexander Atou and Josh Yearby led the way on the track for Beloit. Atou, who hails from Abomey Calavi, Benin, took first in the 400-meter dash after finishing in 50.56 seconds, 0.77 seconds faster than second-place finisher Matthew Lungu of Lake Forest.

Yearby, a freshman out of West Park, Fla., was particularly strong in the short-distance events as he won the 200 (22.65) and took third in the 100 (10.98).

Atou leadoff the first-place 4x400 relay with Nathaniel Otis, Israel Zewdie and Daniel DeGeorge teaming up to finish in 3:24.93. Yearby anchored the 4x100 relay with Ayouba Sumoaro, DeGeorge, and Otis, helping the team take second in the event (43.36).

Atou also had a fourth-place finish in the 200 (23.05), where DeGeorge placed ninth (23.57). Zwedie added a top-ten finish in the 400 as he ended sixth (52.38).

Otis continued his strong day with a pair of great performances in the hurdles. He was fourth in the 110-meter (16.20) and third in the 400 (56.69). Beloit Memorial graduate and basketball standout Azeez Ganiyu contributed a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.25) while Quinten Lottig finished fifth in the 400 (59.59).

Diontia Charles and Kevon Mills gave Beloit a big boost in the field events as the duo took the top two spots in the high jump. Charles, a senior from Riverdale, Ill., won with a height of 6-feet, 2-inches. Mills, a freshman from Key West, Fla., wasn’t far behind as he soared to 6-feet. Otis added a fourth-place finish (5-8).

Mills also ended seventh in the long jump (20-6.25).

Caden Anderson, in just his first season throwing the javelin, took third in the home meet (160-11). Senior Jake Bumstead placed 10th (127-9).

Beloit Memorial graduate Joshua Martinez Marte took home a pair of fourth-place finishes in his first Beloit Relays. He threw 47-feet, 10.75-inches in the shot put and 142-feet, 8-inches in the discus.

On the women’s side, Candis Damste had a pair of individual wins and helped two relays finish in first. The senior from Accra, Ghana took first in both the 200 (25.78) and the 400 (58.49). She also anchored the 4x100 relay, which took first place (49.43) with Darcel Royster, Alayna Furch and Hannah Welte, and ran a leg of the winning 4x400 (4:06.81) with Sophia Miller, Jaeonie Echols and Alayna Furch.

Furch placed seventh in the 100 (12.95) with teammate Royster behind her in ninth (13.05). Miller was ninth in the 800 (2:35.52) and Echols ended ninth in the 200 (27.89).

Welte, a senior from Clinton High School, had a stellar day both on the track and in the field. She finished second in the 400 hurdles (1:08.78) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.95), where Niomee Casey was 10th.

Welte won the long jump with a distance of 16-feet, 8.5-inches. Royster placed sixth (16-2.5).

Elizabeth Kalk, also a Clinton graduate, finished second in the high jump (5-0.25) and 10th in the javelin (85-5). Junior Hadja Bayo, a teammate of Welte and Kalk’s on the basketball team, was sixth in the discus (117-5).
