BELOIT—It was a double dose of fun for the fans at ABC Supply Stadium as the Beloit Sky Carp used some elite pitching to sweep a twinbill with the Peoria Chiefs 3-2, 3-1 on a sunny and warm Wednesday afternoon.

The two Midwest League squads were playing a pair of seven-inning games after Tuesday’s torrential downpours caused wet grounds at the ballpark and delayed the six-game series’ start.

For Beloit, it was well worth the wait as a stadium filled with school children out for education day witnessed the Sky Carp win the first contest via a walkoff for the second-straight game after being held hitless for the first six innings.

Down 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Osiris Johnson struck out and brought Johnny Olmstead up to the plate. The shortstop gave the Sky Carp their first hit of the day as he blasted the second pitch he saw over the fence in left field for a solo homer.

Yiddi Cappe and Jake Thompson both popped out and sent the game to extras. Dale Stanavich came on and struck out the first two batters in the eighth before Leonardo Bernal flew out to right to keep it tied at two.

Josh Zamora began the bottom of the frame by moving automatic runner Mark Coley, pinch running for Thompson, on a sacrifice bunt. Peoria reliever Tanner Jacobson then intentionally walked Cameron Barstad and Jake DeLeo ended it when he smashed a hit over the center fielder’s head to bring Coley home.

Beloit had cut into Peoria’s 2-0 lead in the sixth after Cappe, Thompson and Barstad walked the bases loaded. DeLeo struck out for the second out but Torin Montgomery was hit by a pitch to put the Sky Carp on the board.

The Chiefs’ Michael Currialle smacked an RBI single in the first and brought another run home on a force out in the sixth. DeLeo drew four walks for the Sky Carp.

Jacob Miller threw five solid innings in his start for Beloit as he allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Cooper Hjerpe started for Peoria and went 3 1-3 innings while not allowing a hit and striking out seven.

Beloit was outhit 5-2 in the loss with Alex Iadisernia recording two for the Chiefs.

NIGHTCAP: Emmett Olson had another strong showing in his second start for the Sky Carp as he threw six innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out eight.

The Miami Marlins’ 2023 fourth-round pick allowed just two hits and two walks in 5 2-3 scoreless innings last Wednesday. He has yet to allow a run in 27 2-3 total innings pitched this season.

The Sky Carp got all three of their runs off starter Inohan Paniagua, who allowed three hits in 3 2-3 innings and struck out six but walked four.

Thompson singled with one out in the first, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Coley then walked and stole second before Zamora brought both home with his double to center.

Zach Levenson homered in the third to cut Beloit’s lead in half but the Sky Carp upped the lead back up to two runs in the fourth after Jan Mercado drew a base on balls with one out and, a fly out later, Olmstead, Cappe and Thompson all walked to bring a run home.

Josh Ekness, the Marlins’ 12th-round pick who was making his Beloit debut, then threw a perfect seventh with a strikeout.

Mercado had the other hit for the Sky Carp with his double

Beloit will continue the six-game homestand with Peoria on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
