BELOIT — Beloit battled from behind several times on Thursday night at ABC Supply Stadium, but the Cardiac Carp finally ran out of comebacks.

The Peoria Chiefs scored an unearned run in the eighth inning and then held the Sky Carp in check to pull out a 4-3 victory after being swept in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Peoria took a 1-0 lead against Beloit starter Cade Gibson in the third inning on Thursday. Joshua Baez singled to left and an out later Zach Levenson singled to right to send him to third. Alex Iadisernia then hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Beloit wiped that lead away in the fifth inning against the Chiefs’ Pete Hansen. Osiris Johnson reached on an error and Johnny Olmstead singled to right. Yiddi Cappe bounced into a forceout at second, sending Johnson to third. After Jake Thompson walked, Mark Coley II grounded into a forceout at second that allowed Johnson to score to tie the game. Cameron Barstad followed with a run-scoring single to center to put the Sky Carp on top 2-1.

The Chiefs went back on top in the sixth inning. Levenson walked and immediately stole second base. Two outs later, with Levenson at third, Michael Curialle belted a run-scoring single to right to knot the game at 2-2. Osvaldo Tovalin followed with an RBI base hit to give Peoria a 3-2 lead.

Again, it didn’t last. Johnson hit a two-out double to right in the bottom of the inning and after Olmstead walked, Cappe greeted reliever Tyler Bradt with a run-scoring single to center for a 3-3 tie.

After being shut out by reliever Edgar Sanchez for an inning, the Chiefs scored what proved to be the game-winner in the eighth against Tyler Eckberg (0-1). Dakota Harris reached on a one-out single and Leonardo Bernal then hit a grounder to shortstop Olmstead. His throw retired Bernal, but when Harris tried to motor to third base, first baseman Torin Montgomery threw the ball away and allowed the Chief to score for a 4-3 lead.

The Sky Carp were uncharacteristically quiet in the ninth, with Barstad, Jake DeLeo and Josh Zamora all grounding out off reliever Benito Garcia.

Beloit collected 10 hits and six bases on balls, but stranded 13 baserunners. Cappe, Barstad, Montgomery and Olmstead all had two hits.
