    Beloit College baseball team's season ends with losses in D-III Lexington Regional

    LEXINGTON, Ky. — Beloit College’s Buccaneers were riding high after winning the Midwest Conference Tournament, but the opposing pitching in the NCAA Division III Lexington Regional shut them down.

    Beloit managed just five hits and dropped its opening game 7-3 on Friday against Spalding University. and then fell 5-2 to the host of the regional, Transylvania University, on Saturday. The Bucs ended the season with a 24-17 overall record and a 14-10 MWC record.

    Designated the visiting team, TU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Beloit starter Ben Schweit and added a run in the third.

    A two-run homer by Henry Mitcham a few batters later made it 4-0.

    The Bucs cut it to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Brenden Meyers hit a pinch-hit leadoff double down the left field line. Jack Alport’s groundout moved Meyers to third. Miles Souza’s groundout scored him.

    TU scored its fifth run in the fifth inning.

    The Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning. Alport led off with a single to center and Souza also singled. TU caught a break when Brett Kiger’s smash up the middle hit the infield umpire and everyone only moved up a base. Connor Vogel followed with an RBI single through the right side.

    Schweit pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned). He had seven strikeouts.Harvey Pena pitched two innings with a hit, walk and a strikeout. Tommy Murray pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

    • FRIDAY: After six hours of rain delays, the Bucs couldn’t get rolling offensively, although Matt O’Leary did provide a highlight when his two-run homer in the top of the fifth made him the school’s all-time hits leader with 224, passing former teammate Garrison Ferone.

    The Bucs used four pitchers, starting with Aiden Phipps (8-4), who went 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and five runs. Pena worked 2 1-3 innings and allowed two hits and two runs. Murray pitched a scoreless 2-3 of an inning and Kaiya Nishino retired the lone batter he faced. He became the Bucs’ all-time leader in appearances with 52.
