Beloit Sky Carp drop series finale with Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

APPLETON, Wis.—When Josh Zamora sent a three-run bomb over the left-field wall in the sixth inning, the Beloit Sky Carp were certainly hoping it would be the spark it needed to rally and salvage the series finale against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Instead, the Sky Carp’s bats went cold and Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Timber Rattlers resulted in Beloit’s ninth loss in the past 10 games and ensured Wisconsin won the six-game series 5-1.

The Timber Rattlers (26-13) struck first in the finale as Luke Adams and Tayden Hall singled to start the bottom of the second. Two outs later, Jesus Chirinos smacked a double off starter Alex Williams to left field to bring both home.

Beloit (18-20) fell behind 5-0 in the fifth when Chirinios and Dylan O’Rae both walked before Jadher Areinamo singled to load the bases. A throwing error by left fielder Jake DeLeo on a fly out allowed a run to score and a wild pitch combined with a throwing error by catcher Cameron Barstad let two more runners score.

Jake Thompson singled and Mark Coley walked to set up Zamora’s homer, his seventh of the season. But a single by Carlos Santiago in the seventh and a two-out walk by DeLeo in the ninth was the only offense the Sky Carp could muster over the final three innings.

Williams was charged with five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks with a strikeout in five innings. Josh White, Zaier Meachem and Dale Stanavich threw the last three innings and each allowed one hit and no runs.

DL Hall, acquired in the Corbin Burnes trade, pitched the first inning in a rehab assignment and didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out one. Edwin Jimenez threw the next six innings and struck out six while allowing three runs on five hits.

Zamora had two hits for the Sky Carp while Tayden Hall had a pair of hits for the Timber Rattlers.

Beloit continues its road trip on Tuesday at 10:05 a.m. when it begins a six-game series against the Great Lakes Loons.

    • FRIDAY’S RECAP: Zamora smacked a two-run homer to left in the second but Wisconsin clawed its way ahead for a 4-2 win.

Jadher Areinamo had an RBI double in the third, Jheremy Vargas hit a one-run single in the sixth to tie it, Hall broke the draw with his RBI single in the seventh and Luis Lara added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Zamroa had three hits while Johnny Olmstead and DeLeo each had two. O’Rae and Terence Dotson had two for Wisconsin.

Karson Milbrandt started for the Sky Carp and allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in four innings. Yujanyer Herrera threw the final four frames and worked around five hits to not allow a run and strike out four.

    • SATURDAY’S RECAP: Beloit rallied to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the ninth before Chirinios walloped a walk-off three-run homer to left as Wisconsin won 8-7.

Zamroa hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth and scored on an RBI single by Torin Montgoemry to help the Sky Carp overtake the lead.

Thompson, Zamora, Olmstead and DeLeo all had two hits as Beloit finished with 11. Chirinos and Gregory Barrios each had two hits.

Ike Buxton started for the Sky Carp and went six innings while allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
