    COLLEGE UPDATE: Beloit's Shelvin Garrett earns UW-W academic honor

    UW-Whitewater track and field athlete and Beloit native Shelvin Garrett II was one of 47 Warhawks recognized as 2023-24 Chancellor’s Scholar-Athletes.

    The Physical Education major was recognized in a ceremony on Monday at the James R. Connor University Center by Chancellor Corey A. King and Director of Athletics Ryan Callahan.

    To be recognized as Scholar-Athletes, student-athletes must have maintained a 3.25 cumulative grade point average or above through the end of the 2023 fall semester. Honorees must have participated in a varsity sport for two years, must be of senior academic status and must have accumulated at least 90 degree credits.

    Garrett also received All-WIAC First Team accolades based on his performance at the WIAC championship meet. Conference champions were awarded first team, runners-up second team and third-place finishers honorable mention.

    Garrett will compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships this weekend in Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Most recently, he took first in his signature event at the recent NCC Carius/Gregory Invitational in Naperville, Ill.

    Garrett won the triple jump by leaping 14.62 meters (47-feet, 11.75 inches) on his final attempt.

    Garrett was the 2024 National Indoor Champion in the triple jump with an effort of 15.97 meters, a Warhawk record.

    WARHAWKS ROLL ON: Pitcher Jackson Burk (Beloit Turner) is a member of the UW-Whitewater baseball team, which secured the WIAC regular season championship outright on May 3, with a pair of victories against UW-Stevens Point.

    The Warhawks finished the regular season with a 32-8 record, including a 19-5 mark in conference play. They have won 22 WIAC regular season championships, including six of the past seven.

    The Warhawks then finished with a 3-0 record in the conference tournament. UWW topped UW-La Crosse 11-3 in the tournament final. They went on to host an NCAA D-III regional which they won by defeating Centre College 6-4.

    Next up for UW-Whitewater is hosting a super regional against UW-La Crosse Friday and Saturday at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium. Friday’s game is at noon and Saturday’s game is at 11 a.m.

    LEWIS SALUTES DUO: Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., honored a pair of local athletes for academic excellence by receiving Brother David Delahanty Awards.

    Breanna Culver of Roscoe was honored as a member of the women’s soccer team studying Elementary Education. Kelsey Olson of South Beloit was honored as a member of the women’s bowling team studying Biology.

    Culver played a year at Division I UW-Milwaukee where she was part of the squad that won the Horizon League title. At Hononegah, the forward was an All-NIC-10 performer and a member of the IHSA All-State First Team and United Soccer Coaches All Region Team.

    Olson, a fifth-year bowler, was team MVP at Hononegah and played at Rock Valley College before transferring to Lewis.
