Beloit Sky Carp fall again to Great Lakes Loons in 10th inning 7-6

MIDLAND, Mich. — This is just getting monotonous.

For the second straight game, the Beloit Sky Carp lost a late lead to the host Great Lakes Loons, who then pulled out a one-run victory in the 10th inning.

Wednesday night, Beloit fell,14-13. Thursday wasn’t quite that kind of slugfest, but the Loons still won 7-6.

Beloit had the first crack in the 10th at breaking the 6-6 tie with Josh Zamora the automatic runner at second and reliever Kelvin Ramirez coming on to face Johnny Olmstead. He grounded out with Zamora taking third. Cameron Barstad struck out and after Torin Montgomery walked, Chase Luttrell grounded out.

The Sky Carp also switched relievers to start the bottom of the 10th with Josh Ekness replacing Josh White with the Loons’ Nick Biddison at second base. Dylan Campbell and Kyle Nevin walked back-to-back to load the bases, but Ekness nearly got out of it as he struck out the next two batters.

That brought up one of the heroes of Wednesday’s win. Thayron Liranzo delivered the game-winning double in that one and this time only needed a single to center to drive in Biddison with the winning run.

It was mostly an uphill battle for the Sky Carp, who were outhit 12-9.

They scored in the first inning when Yiddi Cappe and Jake Thompson walked, Cappe stole third base and Zamora lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

Great Lakes answered with a four-run first inning, featuring a solo home run by Nevin, a two-run single by Sam Mongelli and a run-scoring throwing error by Beloit starting pitcher Cade Gibson.

The Sky Carp battled back to tie it up. Zamora hit his third home run in two games to lead off the fourth inning and in the sixth, Olmstead and Barstad collected two-out singles and both scored on Montgomery’s double.

Beloit went on top 6-4 in the eighth inning. Olmstead drew a walk and stole second. When Montgomery walked, the Loons brought in reliever Livan Reinoso to replace Madison Jeffrey. He struck out Luttrell, but Osiris Johnson doubled to center to drive in both Sky Carp.

That 6-4 lead lasted only that half-inning. Reliever Edgar Sanchez was replaced by White to start the eighth and Dylan Campbell greeted him with a double. Two strikeouts later, Chris Newell smacked a two-run homer to tie it.

The series continues Friday through Sunday.
