MIDLAND, Mich. — At least it didn’t go 10 innings.

The Beloit Sky Carp, who played four straight 10-inning games against the Great Lakes Loons heading into Sunday’s afternoon contest and lost three of them, fell 9-3 in the series finale.

The Loons won the series 4-2 and Beloit ended its road trip with a 3-9 record to slip to 20-24 overall. The fourth-place Sky Carp trail Midwest League West Division leader Cedar Rapids (27-16) by 7.5 games.

Great Lakes jumped on Beloit starting pitcher Alex Williamd for five runs (three earned) in the first inning and the Sky Carp couldn’t catch up.

Johnny Olmstead and Cam Barstad each had two hits for the Sky Carp and combined for all three runs batted in.

After taking Monday off, the Sky Carp will try to turn it around with a 12-game homestand at ABC Supply Stadium that starts at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday against the Dayton Dragons.

    • SATURDAY: The Loons moved to 3-1 in 10-inning wins against Beloit with a 9-8 victory.

For the second time in the series, the Loons hit a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sam Mongelli was the culprit this time.

As in Sunday’s loss, Beloit trailed 5-0. Only Saturday, the Sky Carp were able to rally to tie the contest. Mark Coley blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Olmstead later hit a sacrifice fly to draw Beloit within 5-4.

Sam Praytor put Beloit on top with a three-run homer in the eighth inning, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. Reliever Dale Stanavich allowed Mongelli’s blast and Tyler Eckberg (0-2) allowed the game-winning run and took the loss.

Beloit starter Ike Buxton also had a rough start, allowing five runs (four earned) in 4 2-3 innings.

Josh Zamora extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double. That ended Sunday when he went 0-for-2.

    • FRIDAY: The Sky Carp evened the series at 2-2 at this point by posting a 5-4 victory in 10 innings. As wild pitch allowed Jake Thompson to score the game-winner.

Reliever Xavier Meachem came on to work the bottom of the 10th inning and held the Loons scoreless to collect his first save of the season.

Beloit grabbed a 4-0 lead on two-run singles by Yiddi Cappe and Praytor, but a ninth-inning solo homer by Chris Newell eventually tied the game.

Beloit starter Karson Milbrandt allowed only one run in 5 1-3 innings and struck out a season-best nine.

Reliever Nigel Belgrave struck out five in two innings of relief.
