Jake DeLeo hits go-ahead homer as Beloit Sky Carp open series with 4-3 win

BELOIT — Beloit Sky Carp left fielder Jake DeLeo had seen enough.

DeLeo had watched Guy Lipscomb triple to start off the seventh and score an out later on Jonah Advincula’s groundout to second base to break a 2-all tie and put the Lake County Captains in position to open the six-game series with a victory.

So in the bottom of the eighth, following a leadoff single from Tony Bullard and a line out, DeLeo launched a 0-1 pitch from reliever Zach Jacobs over the left-center wall for the go-ahead home run as Beloit beat Lake County 4-3.

Sky Carp reliever Nigel Belgrave, who had worked around two walks in a scoreless eighth, allowed a single to Lipscomb to start the ninth.

But Maick Collado flew out and Lipscomb was caught stealing second by catcher Cameron Barstad before Belgrave got a strikeout to earn his second win of the season.

Beloit got a run across in the first after Johnny Olmstead reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman with one out, moved to third on Josh Zamora’s double to center field and scored when Montgomery grounded out to the shortstop.

The Captains then pounced for two runs on starter Jacob Miller. Jose Devers doubled to center with one out and Lipscomb’s single put runners on the corners before Collado’s sac fly to center tied it up.

Advincula put Lake County ahead with his RBI triple to right field but he was stranded after Miller induced a fly out.

The Sky Carp had tied it up at two in the bottom of the sixth after Torin Montgomery started with a single and, after two outs, Jake DeLeo drew a walk to bring up Jorge Caballero, who drove an RBI single into right field.

The tying-hit chased Captains’ starter Austin Peterson, who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Jacobs got a strikeout to escape the inning and threw a scoreless seventh before allowing the go-ahead homer.

DeLeo went 2-for-3 with a walk from the plate while Caballero and Zamora also had two hits for the Sky Carp, which edged Lake County 9-8 in hits.

Beloit will play a doubleheader on Thursday to make up Tuesday’s rainout. Game one will start at 4 p.m. and the nightcap will begin shortly after its conclusion.
