Beloit Sky Carp blow four-run lead in 6-5 loss to Quad Cities

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Beloit Sky Carp built up a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning and were surely feeling oh so confident about opening up a six-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits with a victory.

Instead, the River Bandits’ offense erupted in the final stages of the game and Carter Jensen’s sacrifice fly to right field scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth as the Sky Carp fell 6-5 on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

With the score tied at five, Quad Cities’ Dustin Dickerson reached on a fielding error by Mark Coley out in left. Jack Pineda laid down a bunt, and a throwing error by pitcher Evan Taylor put runners on the corners to set up Jensen’s winning flyout.

Beloit starter Jacob Miller was stellar from the mound as he threw six scoreless innings while working around five hits and a walk with a career-high 11 strikeouts.

But facing a four-run deficit, Jared Dickey singled to begin the seventh off reliever Kyle Crigger. Trevor Werner singled to left and, after a fly out, Dickerson’s single into left scored Dickey.

Josh White then came in to relieve Crigger, and Pineda welcomed him with an RBI double to center. Jensen struck out but Brett Squires and Kale Emshoff laced back-to-back one-run singled to help Quad Cities overtake the lead 5-4.

Beloit tied it in the eighth after Jake DeLeo and Cameron Barstad both singled to start before Sam Praytor’s double play brought a run across. Tony Bullard walked but Osiris Johnson struck out.

Oscar Rayo set down the Sky Carp 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn the win.

A two-run single by Bullard and a sac fly by Johnson made it 3-0 in the second, and Coley’s RBI single in the seventh upped it to a four-run advantage.

All nine players in the Sky Carp’s lineup had at least one hit with Praytor leading the way after going 2-for-4.

Pineda went 3-for-4 for Quad Cities, which outhit the Sky Carp 11-10.

Beloit will be back in action against the River Bandits on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m
