Beloit Sky Carp's matchup with the Lansing Lugnuts canceled

BELOIT — The only factor that could stand in the way between the Beloit Sky Carp and expanding its five-game winning streak was mother nature.

A heavy rain in the Stateline caused Thursday night’s game between the Lansing Lugnuts and the Sky Carp to be canceled.

Because the contest was set to be the last game of the first half of the season, it will not be made up as both teams are out of contention to win the first half title in their respective divisions.

Beloit wraps up the first half of the season in third place in the Midwest League West with a 30-33 record. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, won the West after finishing 42-23. The Cedar Rapids Kernels finished second with a 37-27 mark.

In the East, the Lake County Captains clinched the title with a 40-25 record while the Lugnuts finished in fourth at 32-33.

The team with the best record in the first half of the season plays the team in their division that had the most wins in the second half in the first round of the postseason. If the same team were to repeat at the top, it would go to the second-place squad. The winner from each divisional series then plays each other for the MWL championship title.

Beloit will look to make it six-straight wins and begin its quest to win the second-half crown on Friday as the six-game homestand continues against the Lugnuts.

Prospect Thomas White, who is ranked No. 3 by MLB Pipeline in the Miami Marlins’ farm system, will take the mound, and the Sky Carp are giving away Hawaiian shirts to the first 1,000 fans through the gates, which open up at 5:30 p.m.

Beloit will then play the Lugnuts on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. and finish up the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
