BELOIT — When Natalie Miller departed as the Beloit College head women’s basketball coach after helping lead the squad to its most successful in 15 years, the Buccaneers knew that ensuring the next hire continues that upward trajectory was a must.

And who better to take on that task than someone who helped make the Bucs a competitive team once again.

Beloit College Director of Athletics Dave DeGeorge announced that Larry Knight has been promoted from his position as an assistant on the women’s team and will become the head coach for the 2024-25 season.

“We are extremely pleased to have Larry Knight leading our women’s basketball program”, DeGeorge said in a press release. “Larry did a fantastic job last season as an assistant coach for Natalie Miller. He had a big impact on recruiting and built terrific relationships with our returning players. He is energetic, smart and has high expectations.”

Miller left the position to become the head coach at the NAIA’s College of Saint Mary in Omah, Nebraska after two seasons in Beloit.

After going 4-20 overall and winless in the Midwest Conference the year prior to Miller’s hiring, she helped the Bucs improve to 8-17 and 4-12 in conference play her first season.

Beloit then went 11-14 this past winter, the most wins in a season since 2008-09, and went 8-8 in the MWC to finish sixth.

Of course, as an assistant on the team, Knight had plenty to do with that success. In his role he worked on practice plans, film breakdown and held individual workouts with players.

“I am honored to be the new head women’s basketball coach here at Beloit,” Knight said “The community has welcomed me with open arms since I first stepped foot on campus last year. I am excited to work with such a phenomenal team and be a part of the first-class sports program here at Beloit College.”

Knight received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Western Governors University in Utah. He was the head JV basketball coach at the Friends School of Baltimore, a private Quaker high school in Baltimore, Maryland, where he also assisted the varsity coach.
