Beloit Sky Carp up winning streak to five straight games with 3-2 win over Timber Rattlers

BELOIT — The Beloit Sky Carp’s offense erupted for 10 hits and the pitching staff limited the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to just two earned runs on six hits.

But it was Beloit’s defense that provided the winning play in the Sky Carp’s 3-2 win over the Timber Rattlers in the opener of a six-game homestand at ABC Supply Stadium.

Beloit reliever Xavier Meachem struck out Jesus Chirinos to start the ninth before Wisconin put the tying run at first via Eduarqui Fernandez’s single to center. But Luis Lara hit a grounder to first baseman Torin Montgomery, who threw over to shortstop Johnny Olmstead at second for the 1-6 double play.

The victory helped Beloit up its winning streak to five games. The Sky Carp went on a nine-game winning streak earlier this summer.

Meachem earned his seventh save of the season with the scoreless ninth. Beloit’s strong night from the mound began with starter Karson Milbrandt, who allowed four hits, four walks and an earned run while striking out four.

Milbrandt’s lone blemish came in the second when Eduardo Garcia started the frame off with a triple to right field and scored on Felix Valerio’s ground out in the following at-bat.

The starter frequently worked around trouble, walking Lara and allowing a single to Luke Adams in the first before stranding both and allowing a walk to Adams and a single to Matthew Wood in the fourth before getting three-straight outs, two via strikeout.

The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth off Chirinos’ double and walks from Jadher Areinamo and Luke Adams. But Milbrandt coaxed Wood into a groundout to end the jam.

Ignacio Feliz threw a scoreless sixth but Wisconsin made it 2-0 off the reliever in the seventh when Fernadez walked, stole second and scored on Lara’s double.

Feliz moved to 4-0 on the season, however, after Beloit surged ahead in the seventh. Jorge Caballero began the inning with a single off reliever Chase Costello and Carlos Santiago tied the game up when blasted his seventh homer of the season on a shot to right field.

Chase Luttrell followed with a single and Mark Coley’s double into left put Beloit ahead 3-2.

Costello wasted a strong outing from Alexander Cornielle, who allowed no earned runs, four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings.

Edgar Sanchez threw a 1-2-3 eighth for Beloit.

The series continues at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
