Amazon Fresh stores in Bensalem, Middletown are hiring. Could they open soon?

Anyone looking for more proof that two new Amazon Fresh grocery stores in Bucks County could open soon could find it Friday on the online retail giant's job board.

There they would find the company is, once again, advertising openings at its high-tech supermarkets in its much anticipated locations in Middletown and Bensalem.

The future of the two stores have been a source of much speculation over the last two years as developers started, then stopped, then restarted construction.

At some point, both stores removed the familiar white and lime-green brand signage from outside the stores, leaving some wondering if the businesses would become so-called zombie stores.

Typically, Amazon gives no indication of an opening date for its grocery stores. The first sign of an impending opening is usually when jobs are posted for the stores.

The most recent job postings appeared online July 19.

It’s the first time the company has advertised Grocery Associate openings at the location in the Lincoln Plaza shopping center off East Lincoln Highway.  The post listed full and part time positions as well as ones described as “anytime,” which require 4 to 19 hours a week.

The grocery associate positions pay $15.75 an hour, according to the post. Shifts that can be up to eight hours long and start as early as 4 a.m.

The job board also listed openings for Bensalem, which is the second time in recent weeks it advertised grocery associates. This round, though, the company is looking to hire only for “anytime” positions.

Amazon opened its first Fresh store in Bucks County in the Creekview Center in Warrington in August 2021. The Brookwood Shopping Center location in Bensalem was scheduled to open in late 2022, but remains shuttered.

The developer for the Middletown store is still working through unspecified permit approvals before it can open, Manager Stephanie Teoli Kuhls said recently. The township originally approved permits in 2021.

Bensalem and Middletown locations each have liquor licenses, which are currently listed as in “safekeeping,” meaning the licenses are valid, but not currently in use, according to the LCB website.

Both stores also have applications under review with the LCB that seek to extend the physical area of the store where alcohol is sold (and the license covers).
