SVSU Hires New Development VP
Saginaw Valley State University has hired a new vice president for development, following a national search. Brian Brunner comes to the university from Lindenwood University in Missouri, where he has served as the assistant vice president for advancement for the past four years. At Lindenwood, Brunner was a leader in helping the private institution raise more than $5 million each of the past four years, surpassing its annual fundraising goal on each occasion. He introduced the university’s first-ever “giving week” campaign, and he collaborated with Lindenwood’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion to establish a student emergency and equity fund.

The EF1 tornado that struck just southeast of Lake George this past Friday somehow took the path of least resistance and missed almost all man-made structures. This could have been far worse, as its path just a little more toward Arbor Rd or if it zig zagged to Harrison, could have resulted in more damage to homes and the potential for loss of life. Harrison’s sirens were loud enough to be heard over the roar of the trucks participating in the Mud Bog at the Clare County Fairgrounds, but Hayes, Garfield, and Hamilton Townships did not have sirens, and the sirens in Lincoln Township, closest to the tornado’s initial touchdown, both failed at the Fire Station and at the Silver Lake Beach site. Most of us recall hearing the sirens tested the first week of every month, but that has now become a thing of the past. So what happened?

Obituary: Carol Lynn (Rusak) Clute
Carol Lynn (Rusak) Clute, age 69 of Clare, passed away on June 25, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland surrounded by loved ones. Carol was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 15, 1955, to Rose (Rohmer) and Richard Rusak. She grew up in Gladwin before attending Central Michigan University, where she earned a B.A. in Home Economics and Fashion Merchandising with a concentration in fashion design. On April 30, 1983, Carol married Dave Clute in Clare, where they went on to raise a family and live for the next 41 years.
Carl Priemer, 82, of Beaverton
Carl Priemer, 82, of Beaverton, passed away on July 11, 2024. He was born on September 20, 1941, the son of Adolph and Louise (Schroder) Priemer in Detroit. On February 5, 1982, he married Maxine Spangler in Gladwin. He worked for Michigan Bell and owned Priemer Excavating in Beaverton. As owner of Priemer Excavating, Carl worked as a sexton for several townships in Gladwin County. Carl enjoyed watching NASCAR and loved his job working on heavy equipment and “playing in the dirt,” helping many in Gladwin County.
