Plenty of Potential Spied at the Benton County Fair 2024
VINTON — The 152nd Benton County Fair is in the books. The theme this year was, “Spy Your Potential.” Tons of area 4-H and FFA members made some new memories as they displayed their completed projects and had the chance to show off their livestock exhibits in the show ring. Despite the heat and the occasional rain shower, from Wednesday, June 19 through Sunday, June 23, folks from the area enjoyed the livestock shows, walking through the exhibit halls, attending the Midway, and nightly events at the Grandstand.
EMA Coordinator Scott Hansen Retires after 25 Years
VINTON — With the rising waters of the Cedar River, Scott Hansen is sure to have an interesting last week as Benton County’s Emergency Management Agency Coordinator. After 25 years, Hansen’s last day on the job will be Friday, June 28. The EMA office will be hosting an Open House on Hansen’s last day from 10 am — 2 pm. Presentations will be given at 11 am. EMA Commissioner Chairman Steve Meyer said he hopes folks will stop in with memories and well-wishes.

For most of modern history since the Stonewall Riots of 1969, LGBTQ Pride celebrations have been consigned to larger cities throughout the month of June. In Iowa, the main celebrations have been in Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City.

Irvine Prairie Walkabout set for July 9
IRVINE PRAIRIE – Bring along a chair and join Women, Land & Legacy from Benton and Tama counties for their upcoming event, “Irvine Prairie Walkabout.” It will be held on Tuesday, July 9 at 1174 55th Street in rural Dysart. The location is three miles north of IA 8 on County Road V-37, then 1¾ miles east on 55th Street. This event will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Since this is an outdoor event, a rain date is scheduled for July 11 at the same time and location. “Pasture-appropriate” footwear, long pants and long sleeves are recommended for uneven terrain and tall vegetation.
