Golf tournament raises funds for kids across southern Illinois
BENTON, IL — The local community is golfing for a cause to raise money for kids in southern Illinois. The 33rd Annual Fundraiser and Golf Scramble starts at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 22, at the Franklin County Country Club south of West Frankfort, raising money for the Coats for Kids program.
Swatting incident in Carrier Mills under investigation
CARRIER MILLS, Ill. (WJPF) – Police in Carrier Mills gave an update about an investigation last night. Around 8:15pm on July 21, the Saline Co. Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from an individual who had claimed he had shot and killed his father. The caller also stated that he was armed and barricaded in a residence close to the Carrier Mills High School and he would shoot any responding Officer.

They gathered one last time on Sunday — the handful of mostly elderly members of First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The members, joined by well-wishers, said the Lord’s Prayer, recited the Apostle’s Creed and heard a biblical passage typically used at funerals, “To everything there is a season ... a time to be born, and a time to die.” They sang classic hymns — “Amazing Grace,” “It Is Well With My Soul” and, poignantly, “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” Afterward, members voted unanimously to close the church, a century and a half after it was created by hardscrabble farmers in this southern Illinois community of about 14,000 people. Many U.S. churches close their doors each year, typically with little attention. But this closure has a poignant twist.
