CHP in San Mateo County issued severe traffic alert Thursday afternoon following a fatal accident that also caused a fuel spill shut down California State Route 1 in both directions.Authorities reported the incident at around 2:30 p.m. following the traffic collision with injuries north of Capistrano Rd. in El Granada. The accident and resulting fuel spill blocked all lanes of the highway.CHP confirmed to CBS News Bay Area that the collision involved a big rig and a sedan and that at least one person had died as a result. A tweet posted by the CHP Redwood City X account indicated the estimated time to reopen the highway was 5 p.m.However, as of around 5:45 p.m., CHP said only the southbound lanes were open for one-way traffic.  Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area.

The crash happened just after 5:30 a.m. along westbound Interstate 580 near Patterson Pass Road. Exactly what led up to the crash is unclear, but California Highway Patrol confirmed that two big rigs were involved – with one of those vehicles catching fire. No injuries have been reported, authorities say.Westbound I-580 was closed east of International Parkway for a time and fully reopened around 12:30 p.m.Drivers were being urged to use a different route.

An observant Brentwood police officer spotted a wanted and prolific alleged shoplifter over the weekend and arrested her near a store.Police said that on Sunday evening, an officer was patrolling the area of 2400 Sand Creek Road when he noticed a vehicle parked near Raley's. Police arrested a suspect in the killing of a homeless man last week in a downtown Palo Alto parking garage, the department said Friday.The victim was found dead at the City Lot "S,"  garage located at 445 Bryant Street shortly after noon on July 25. Palo Alto police said an autopsy determined the victim, identified as 60-year-old James Allen Rudolph died of blunt force trauma to his head.Investigators identified the suspect as 34-year-old Alvaro Javier Lopez of Palo Alto. On Thursday morning, officers arrested Lopez  inside City Lot "R," the parking garage at 528 High Street, police said.Lopez, also an unhoused resident, was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on a homicide charge.Police said despite the arrest, the investigation remained ongoing as detectives are processing "a significant amount of evidence." There was no information on a possible motive or whether any other suspects may have been involved.Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the department at (650) 329-2413. Novato police said they responded around 3:30 a.m. to a report of a fire near Novato Creek at the park. Police said the fire spread quickly, burning several tents, the perimeter fence, and a large tree in the center of the camp.Residents were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. Concord police are looking for a man they believe is responsible for committing vandalism earlier this week in the Diamond Boulevard corridor.  The man was caught by a security camera Monday, a photo of which police posted on social media. The suspect had short dark hair, appeared to have a mustache, was wearing dark pants and shoes and a dark shirt with what appeared to be a light photo or logo on the front.He also had a dog on a leash and was carrying a plastic bag.
