At 21 years old, Jesse Ssengonzi is one of the fastest swimmers in Uganda. That designation came this past February, as he was wrapping up his economics degree at the University of Chicago. In the midst of his studies and a busy season on the university’s swim team, Ssengonzi traveled to Doha, Qatar for the World Aquatics Championships to compete with the Ugandan national team. A dual citizen in Uganda and the U.S., Ssengonzi placed 39th out of 66 swimmers in his signature event, the 100-meter butterfly. He finished that race in 54.48 seconds in that race, a record-breaking time for the East African country.

‘We’ll be right here’ – Woodlawn residents camp out to protest eviction order
Christiana Powell, a 63-year-old Woodlawn homeowner who was foreclosed on in 2022, is camping out on her lawn in a last-ditch effort to keep her family’s longtime home. After years of fighting the foreclosure in the chancery, appellate and federal courts, Powell received a final eviction order from the Cook County Sheriff's office last week. Defying the eviction order and remaining put alongside Powell are her mother, her great nephew and his family, who each live on a different floor in the three-story greystone.

Illinois Pair Arrested After High-Speed Chase on I-94 in LaPorte County
LaPorte County, IN – A reported high-speed chase on Friday evening led to the arrest of two individuals from Illinois. According to Indiana State Police, the pursuit began around 7:15 p.m. when a trooper reportedly attempted to stop a black Jeep traveling at 71 mph in a 45 mph zone on U.S. 20 near C.R. 400 E. The driver, identified as Roberto Valencuela, 19, of Matteson, IL, allegedly fled west on U.S. 20 and onto I-94, prompting a multi-agency response. The chase continued through LaPorte and Porter Counties, with officers deploying stop sticks multiple times along I-94.

Federal Sentence for Gun Sale in Michigan City
(South Bend, IN) - A Chicago man has been sentenced on a federal gun charge with ties to Michigan City. In January of last year, 42-year-old Allory Smith of Chicago sold a rifle, a handgun, and ammunition to a buyer in the Michigan City area. According to authorities, Smith referred to the rifle as a “real license to kill” because he believed it had previously been reported stolen. With several prior felony convictions, Smith is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Suburban Chicago Man Receives 27-Year Sentence for 2012 Downtown Bomb Plot
A suburban Chicago man has been handed a 27-year sentence for his 2012 attempt to detonate an explosive in downtown Chicago. Adel Daoud, a 30-year-old resident of Hillside, Illinois, believed he was igniting a 1,000-pound car bomb at a bar in Chicago's Loop neighborhood, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois.
