Labor Day weekend in Waitsfield means the Mad River Valley Craft Fair at the scenic Kenyon’s Field with live music, food, and over 80 artist booths to peruse. The 53rd annual event is held rain or shine Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free. Admission is $5; kids 12 and under are free.

A local group of birding enthusiasts – the Mad Birders – has sought out local birds together for two decades. Each year, the group meets for a series of walks through spring and early summer, when birds are most active while breeding. At that time, “they are their most bright, beautiful, colorful selves,” group member Jeannie Elias said.
Animation team films a story about women’s rights and basketball
A segment of a documentary film utilizing stop-motion animation was recently shot at Waitsfield gallery and studio space FireFolk Arts. The film features the story of Jane Rubel – an athlete who filed a lawsuit against the athletic union of her rural Iowa high school in 1970 after she was denied the right to continue playing on the girls’ basketball team because she got married and had a child.
