Three-of-ten gets you in the hall of fame

Three Out of Ten Gets You in The Hall of Fame

The dog days of summer in North Carolina have set in. Daily temperatures in the nineties with humidity to match can make even the simplest outdoor task a battle between your willpower and the need to seek shelter within the air-conditioned confines of your home.

It is also a time when Tar Heel baseball and softball tournaments are in full swing. So here is a shoutout to all the boys, girls, coaches and parents from Cashie All-Stars who represented Windsor and Bertie County so well throughout the District and State Tournaments, and let’s not forget the volunteers from Cashie Youth League who made the local tournament a great success.

I love baseball and softball because they are two of the few sports where failure on an individual level is guaranteed, but you can still come away a winner.

As a matter of fact, it has been eighty years since Major League Baseball had a player with a .400 batting average and .300 hitters have become rare. This means even the best of the best fail more often than they succeed.

Once again, sports replicate life. You can fail repeatedly, but one grand success can wipe away all the prior misfortunes.

This can even be true for President Biden. His failures over the past three and a half years are well documented. From the deaths of thirteen service members during the withdrawal from Afghanistan to the invasion at the southern border, President Biden is nowhere near batting .400.

Add in the inflation rate, the housing crisis, and the unlimited funding of a war in Ukraine, and the President may not even be batting .100 for his term.

All of this can change if he can follow through on his latest promise to restructure the Supreme Court. In all fairness, neither party likes the Supreme Court unless their party holds the majority, and I am totally against changing the rules in the middle of a game, but restructuring is way overdue.

The President has proposed term limits for the Justices, and I can’t agree more. No person, no elected official, no appointed official, should hold a public office for life. Life appointments tend to foster a sense of superiority blended with the knowledge that they are untouchable.

The only problem with this proposal is that President Biden stopped short. He should have included term limits for the Senate and House and any appointed positions within the federal government.

Our governmental bodies have become rest homes for those wishing to create generational wealth for their families and staff. It is time to enact term limit amendments and allow younger, brighter and more energized candidates to take the reins of this nation. Seems only fair since politicians are always saying “it’s about future generations.”

If President Biden can put the bat on the ball and do the impossible — crush term limit legislation — not only would it improve his batting average, but he would instantly become eligible for the Hall of Fame.
