The long hot summer is winding down!

This year we had to postpone Windsor Riverfest from May to August. We were able to hold the event on Aug. 3 at the Roanoke/Cashie River Center. We did not have as many people as we wanted to attend, but did have a thunderstorm and a couple of showers, as well as it being very hot and humid as it normally is in August. Maybe that was enough to make excuses for the somewhat low attendance.

Next year perhaps some effective advertising and hopefully a return of the local brewing companies will help.

Our music entertainment for the event was “The Mighty Saints of Soul.” They are a beach music band that we have had locally four times in the last three years. Currently, their song “L.O.V.E.” is number 11 on the Beach Music Top 40 and has been on the list for the last 24 weeks.

They have experienced two well-attended and two not-so-well attended events here in Windsor. Their music and abilities are excellent, and we always enjoy having them.

Additionally, we had local singer, Jason Johnson, perform as the opening act for the event for the Mighty Saints of Soul. Jason did an excellent job, and we will most likely use him again at some point.

Randy Hignite, who is formally of the Band of Oz in the seventies and the Embers in the nineties and the Mighty Saints of Soul for the last 15 or so years, has been excellent to work with and we will probably have them back for Freedom Fireworks next year.

An alligator was present at the event, and it did not emerge from the Cashie River, but was brought by Sylvan Heights Bird Park to the event along with a companion duck. Many other organizations were represented like The Rock Museum from Scotland Neck, the Oyster Trail from N.C. State, North Carolina Conservation Network and a number more were present like Top Dog Food Truck and Murfreesboro Creamery.

We are looking forward to next year and returning to our normal May date.

We are certainly excited about the opening of three businesses this summer, Bream Medical and Lee’s Furniture Décor on Granville Street and, of course, Royals Farms convenience store on the bypass. Royal Farms, along with the Carolina Car Wash and the combination of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, have made a nice addition to that area. We look forward to more businesses coming to Windsor, maybe sooner than later.

Destination Bertie has made some architectural drawings for all of the municipalities in Bertie County, and we are currently reviewing and changing them so we can use them to attract grants and to actually implement these designs for all of our downtown area.

They also presented at the Windsor Riverfest so that the citizens of Bertie County could see what they had prepared. The town of Windsor is involved in a building purchase program which we do need help with what to do with the spaces after the buildings are torn down. The idea is to use the space in a positive way other than just making more parking lot space.

More information to come on that project!
