In “Righteous Warrior: Jesse Helms and the Rise of Modern Conservatism,” William Link, retired professor at the University of Florida, followed Helms from his birth and youth in Monroe to the time of his announced...

You are valuable in the eyes of God
The most helpful folks are those who possess the strong paradox of confidence and humility. The person who says, “I don’t know how much I can help, but I will do all that I can.” The man who walks in strong confidence while also considering those around him. Anyone willing to lead and let others contribute is an influencer who can build any team and make every person better. Regrettably,...
What it takes to say "It is well with my soul"
Horatio G. Spafford, a Presbyterian from Chicago, was a successful businessman and devout Christian. After losing his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and tragically losing his son, he faced further hardship. In 1873, his wife and four daughters set off to England, but their ship sank. Only his wife survived. He penned “It Is Well with My Soul” as he approached the area where it was believed his daughter’s ship sank. ...
Sanding the hardwood of our lives
Recently, my family and I went back home to Georgetown, Delaware to help renovate my parents home. My job was to work on the kitchen cabinets. I was to sand, prime and paint 50-year-old cabinets. In addition to the cabinets, I had to redo the wooden butcher block countertop. My grandfather custom made all the cabinets and the wood countertop. You see he was a carpenter who worked on the...

Will anyone listen to NASCAR's message?
The folks at NASCAR recently made three disciplinary calls that at first seem somewhat confusing. The first was correct, no question about it. The second was actually a no-call that Cup Series fans probably cheered. The third was no surprise, and it gave haters something fresh to hate. Here’s what happened: First: Two weeks ago rookie Carson Hocevar intentionally spun Harrison Burton under caution in Nashville. It cost Hocevar $50,000...

People pleasing is lying
I’ve changed a lot over the last few years, but growing up and through the majority of my teens, twenties and very early thirties, I was a full fledged Type A, people pleasing, perfectionist. I’m sure if I tried really hard, I could point to some reasons for this, but truthfully, I think there’s so much in us that we are just born with. Many of the qualities I’m watching develop in my own children were present at birth. My husband and I didn’t encourage...
