Berwick’s Joey Doiron wins Celebration of America 300 auto race

Berwick’s Joey Doiron took the lead with a little more than 30 laps remaining. He went on to win the first Celebration of America 300 Super Late Model stock car race at Oxford Plains Speedway on Wednesday night.

Doiron, who started fourth in the 38-car field, beat Derek Griffith of Hudson, New Hampshire, by 1.7 seconds. Farmington’s Cassius Clark was third, 1.9 seconds behind Doiron.

Griffith started 21st and Clark began the race 27th.

Doiron pocketed $40,000 for the win. Griffith earned $12,000, and Clark claimed a check for $10,000.

Drivers also receive money for leading laps.

Rounding out the top 10 were Johnny Clark from Hallowell, who started third; Max Cookson of Pittsfield; D.J. Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire; Garrett Hall of Scarborough; Dave Farrington Jr. of Jay; Joe Pastore of Gorham; and pole-sitter Trevor Sanborn of Cornish.

Sixteen cars finished on the lead lap.

NASCAR Cup Series drivers Daniel Hemric and Kyle Busch finished 21st and 24th, respectively.

Busch was running fourth with 29 laps remaining but was involved in an accident and was unable to finish the race.

Busch, who has won 231 races in NASCAR’s top three series (Cup Xfinity, Trucks) and is a two-time Cup Series champion, started 16th and Hemric started 24th.

Hemric completed 298 of the 300 laps.
