Ride to End Cancer Cruises Through Somers
SOMERS, N.Y. - Anyone driving past Somers Middle School and Somers Intermediate School on Sunday, July 21, would believe Somers had been invaded. The field separating the schools was transformed into a mass of tents and a sea of cycles. Over 375 cyclists on the Empire State Ride to End Cancer concluded the first day of a seven-day, 500+ mile adventure from New York City to Niagara Falls that raises funds for cancer research. The riders, many of whom were cancer survivors and supported by an army of volunteers, began the day in Staten Island, ferried to Manhattan and wound their way to Somers. So far, in 2024, the riders have raised nearly $2 million, making the cumulative total over $10 million. The funds raised by the riders support cutting-edge cancer research at America’s first cancer center dedicated to research, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
