Bethlehem Area Weekly Police Blotter July 3- Crash and aggravated DWI on Bridge Street

Clifton Park woman charged

SELKIRK – Bethlehem police and EMS responded to Bridge Street on Thursday, May 30 at approximately 8:05 p.m. for a report of a personal injury vehicle accident.

According to reports, police found a 2004 gray Toyota Corolla crashed into brush and observed tire markings in the front yard leading to the vehicle.

The driver, a 20-year-old Clifton Park woman was near the vehicle and refused EMS treatment. EMS personnel reported to police that they had observed the same vehicle driving recklessly in the area a short time before the crash.

While interviewing the woman, officers observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath, her eyes were bloodshot and glassy and she had slurred speech.

The woman was given and failed field sobriety tests, tested positive for breath alcohol on a pre-screening device and was taken into custody.

An inventory of the car yielded a half-full bottle of Nue Vodka. At the police station, the woman provided a breath sample that returned over a .18 percent BAC.

The woman was charged with aggravated DWI and reckless driving, both misdemeanors, and ticketed for drinking in a motor vehicle, speeding, illegal signal, driving to the left of pavement marking and unsafe lane change.

She was given a bill of particulars and released with an appearance ticket for June 18.

2021 warrants lead to more warrants

GLENMONT – A 43-year old Troy man was transported to meet officers from Bethlehem police for failing to appear in court in 2022 after he was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants in December 2021 after he was detained for allegedly stealing items from Walmart.

According to reports, Jeffery Shackett was processed on the warrant and arraigned by Bethlehem Judge Ryan Donovan on June 5 and released on his own recognizance.

Car chase leads to charges

DELMAR – While he was performing another traffic stop on Elm Avenue Extension on Friday, June 21 at approximately 7:25 p.m., Bethlehem a police officer observed a gray 2017 Honda Civic pass by traveling nearly twice the 35 MPH speed limit.

According to reports, the officer cleared the traffic stop and turned around to attempt to locate the Honda and found it on Route 32. The vehicle did not pull over and turned on to Old Quarry Road where radar clocked the Honda at 102 MPH in a 45 MPH zone.

The police terminated the chase at that point for safety but another factor changed the outcome. A National Grid crew had Old Quarry road closed off as it repaired powerlines and the police unit pulled across the road to block the Honda in.

With his duty weapon drawn, the officer approached the vehicle with three men inside and gave verbal commands to the occupants to exit the vehicle.

One of the National Grid workers, who was a retired police officer, assisted the officer in removing and detaining the three men.

All three were taken to the police station and the driver, an 18-year-old Ravena man, was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and unlawfully fleeing a police officer, all misdemeanors, and ticketed for speeding and failure to keep right.

The man was released on an appearance ticket for July 2 in Bethlehem Town Court.

Multiple warrants

GLENMONT – Bethlehem police responded to Walmart on Route 9W to check a person on Saturday, June 22 at approximately 4:01 p.m. and found a man was wanted.

A check of his name and date of birth found that Antwaun Brown, 46, was wanted by multiple jurisdictions. Colonie police advised Brown to turn himself in and the City of Albany said they would take him for their warrant if Bethlehem would drive him to the police station.

Bethlehem officers transported Brown to Albany’s South Station.

Aggravated DWI on Elsmere Avenue

DELMAR – An off-duty police detective notified Bethlehem dispatch on Sunday, June 23 that he was following a black Mercedes C30 that nearly hit another vehicle head on and requested a patrol unit respond.

According to reports, at approximately 9:51 p.m. the responding unit pulled the vehicle over on Elsmere Avenue and interviewed the driver, a 62-year-old Delmar man.

The officer observed the man had bloodshot and watery eyes, had slurred speech, had poor motor coordination demonstrated by him stumbling when exiting the vehicle and had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath.

The man was given and failed field sobriety tests, tested positive for breath alcohol on a pre-screening device and taken into custody. He said he was returning home from “pizza” and his speech was repetitive. A search of the vehicle revealed an open container of Jack Daniels under the driver’s seat.

At the police station, the man provided a breath sample that returned a .26 percent BAC. He was charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, and ticketed for failure to keep right, unsafe lane change, unsafe tires, and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle.
