    What Are Tandem Showerheads?

A tandem shower system features two showerheads that can either be mounted onto the same fixture, or separated and positioned at different points in the same shower, providing two streams of water. The showerheads can be controlled individually or simultaneously, allowing you to customize the water pressure and spray patterns. This indulgent bathroom upgrade can transform your daily shower into a luxurious spa-like experience with greater water coverage and more flexibility in water flow.

Why Tandem Showerheads Are So Trendy

People are paying more attention to their well-being and, as a result, are more conscious of how they experience and feel in their homes. When it comes to self-care at home, the bathroom is one of the first places people turn to with the common goal of creating a luxurious or spa-like experience . For many, bathrooms are a sanctuary, posing as one of the few corners of the home where peace and momentary solitude can be found. Showers are also considered a safe space by many to relax and let our deepest thoughts come to fruition.

“A shower is a space people use every day, so we’re seeing clients looking to invest in creating beautiful bathroom experiences,” says Alexis Pew, interior designer and partner Kaminski + Pew . “We often install a rain showerhead and a more traditional wall mount to offer different showering experiences.”

Beyond conjuring a spa-like experience, people also focus on the practicality of having more than one water stream. “Depending on the size of the bathroom, some spaces call for two showerheads,” says Pew. “When you have a large shower, two shower stations help balance the design and function of the space. We typically include a hand shower as well to offer more flexibility for washing the kids and pets and cleaning the shower itself .”

Factors to Consider Before Installing a Tandem Shower

Another big consideration is water pressure , especially if you live in a high-rise. Before ordering a tandem shower, ensure your home’s water pressure is good enough to handle multiple faucets running simultaneously. The ideal water pressure for a multi-faucet shower system should be between 45-80 psi. “If the pressure isn’t sufficient, sometimes a booster pump is needed so the plumbing can perform optimally,” Pew says. Alongside the water pressure, check the flow rate of the water supply. This is measured in gallons per minute (GPM), and a standard showerhead typically uses 2.5 GPM. If installing multiple showerheads , you must ensure the plumbing system can supply enough water to meet the combined GPM of both fixtures. You might also consider a pressure-balancing valve to regulate the hot and cold water ratio and achieve a consistent water temperature.

Tandem showerheads can use more water if both heads are operating at once. However, water-saving models and mindful usage can help mitigate the impact. According to the EPA , showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of residential indoor water use, or almost 40 gallons per day for the average family. To minimize water consumption , Pew suggests looking for bathroom fixtures with the WaterSense label. “Fixtures with the WaterSense label use less water than a standard showerhead,” says Pew, which will reduce demands on water heaters, save energy, and reflect positively on your bills.

Finally, consider what makes sense in the space you have available. To fully enjoy the benefits of a tandem shower system, you need to start with ample shower space. Small bathrooms and shower cubicles don’t usually have enough space for the additional hardware, so you would risk water spraying outside the shower area and causing water damage.

Should You Install a Tandem Showerhead?

Tandem showers are a luxurious upgrade that can enhance both the function and aesthetic of a bathroom. While the dual-headed system offers flexibility, comfort, and a more spa-like experience, it also requires ample space and good water pressure. Of course, it’s also worth noting that the more faucets you have, the higher the price of your bathroom fixtures and installation cost will be, so is it worth the extra dollars?

Ultimately, “it’s important to understand your shower needs,” Pew says. “Do you like company in the shower, or do you value that moment of solitude? If you prefer to shower alone, investing in a second set of plumbing fixtures and a larger shower may be better allocated to a longer vanity or larger closet.” Tandem showers may be the latest bathroom fad, but whether they’re the right fit for your bathroom depends on your personal needs, space requirements, environmental considerations, and budget.
