Get your caffeine fix with a bit of sweetness (half a Splenda, to be exact).

Veteran journalist Katie Couric recently told The New York Times all about her ideal Sunday, which involved sipping on her favorite caffeinated beverage. She orders it all the time from an East Hampton coffee shop, and though she’s been known to admit to a few odd flavor pairings in the past (namely, her three-ingredient sandwich ), everything about this combo is delicious.

Couric orders an iced hazelnut coffee with milk and half of a Splenda: a rich, inviting, and nutty morning drink.

So, what exactly is the difference between hazelnut iced coffee with milk and an iced hazelnut latte? Typically, iced coffee beverages are made with brewed coffee , to which you can then add milk and syrups (or they can be served plain). Lattes are instead always made with espresso shots and then finished off with milk. Iced coffees also usually have more caffeine than an iced latte.

How to Copy Katie Couric's Coffee Order

If you want to try Couric’s morning coffee, make sure you order an iced coffee, then add hazelnut syrup and your sweetener of choice. She doesn't mention mixing in any milk or creamer, but you can't go wrong by doing so: For a creamier drink, opt for oat milk; to further emphasize the hazelnut flavor, choose almond.

It’s a simple yet flavorful beverage you can find at most coffee shops, from Starbucks to local joints, since hazelnut syrup is often considered a barista classic. But Couric always gets her morning brew from the same place: Goldberg’s in East Hampton.

She also mixes in half a Splenda to her morning beverage, though she added that this is a habit she’s trying to quit. Splenda can be a controversial take in the coffee community—it’s sort of a love-it-or-hate-it alternative sweetener —but we can’t deny it sounds delicious. If you prefer a more bitter taste though, skip the Splenda. The hazelnut syrup should provide enough sweetness.

Couric mentions that Goldberg’s is also where she gets her morning bagel : a delectable choice, given the wide range of bagels (and specialty cream cheeses) available on their menu, from poppy to pumpernickel.

Every Sunday, Couric can be found heading to East Hampton bakery Carissa’s , to grab a few loaves of their honey wheat bread (her personal favorite). If you’re an East Hampton local, you might also spot her enjoying her bagel—and signature iced hazelnut coffee, of course—on the beach with her dog.
