If you've ever searched for seasonal home decorating inspiration on social media, it's likely you've come across a space designed by Emily Welch. Known as @emilywelchstyle on Instagram and TikTok, Welch posts dreamy photos and videos showing how she decorates her home with her signature cozy style.

"It just makes you feel like you're at home," Welch says about her design style. "Like you walk in and you know my personality, and you know it's a warm, cozy, safe space."

While we love the decorating content she posts all year, fall is when Welch really takes her home to the next level. Colorful garlands, twinkle lights, and pumpkins in every shape and size are just the tip of the iceberg. Each season, Welch shares decorating tips, recipes, routines, and ideas for seasonal events to host in your space, such as an autumn festival at home — count us in!

We chatted with Welch to learn about how she makes her home so warm, welcoming, and unique. Ahead, Welch shares her best tips for how to create the coziest version of your home this fall.

    1. Add Warm Lighting

One of Welch's biggest tips for creating a warm and inviting space is to adjust the lighting. She says her mood is often affected by light, so she rarely ever turns on her overhead lights. Instead, she uses multiple lamps. She notes that lamps are especially important during fall nights when it gets darker outside earlier. "You're hanging out and you're not ready to go to sleep—it's like 7 o'clock and it's dark," she says. "I need some cozy lighting, but I don't want to turn on all the lights."

The type of lightbulb also makes a difference in the home's overall mood. "I always use a soft, warm white in any lamps," Welch says. Other key players in Welch's lighting lineup include warm-toned twinkle lights and candle warmers.

In addition to light from lamps and candles, Welch utilizes screens to set the atmosphere for a cozy, fall night in. "I really like to turn on a YouTube ambience [video]," she says. "I really like that for reading and matching it to what I'm reading. I really like that for cooking, too."

    2. Layer a Variety of Textures

Welch says layering different textures can help foster a welcoming and cozy feeling in your home. She recommends layering chunky knit blankets, fur throw pillows, and other textiles on couches, chairs, and beds. Consider adding knit throw pillows and woven rugs to add more dimension and texture to a room.

Another way to add texture is by using natural elements. "You kind of feel like you're in the woods," Welch says. She says she's partial to using woven baskets and wooden pumpkins in her home during the fall. Incorporate natural textures and colors by placing wicker baskets in the living room, a jute runner in the entryway, and wooden cutting boards in the kitchen.

    3. Check the Thrift Store

Emily's tip for saving money while decorating for the holidays? Check your local thrift store. Welch says she finds some of the fall items that she uses every year from Goodwill . "I really like decorating for fall with books," she says. "Not necessarily books I love to read, but I will go to Goodwill and buy books based on their color code. They give off a vintage-y feel."

Welch says she likes to decorate with books because they give a cozy, dark academia feel to her space. And if the books don't match the color scheme she's aiming for, Welch says she will turn the books around so only the pages are visible. Welch says she likes to add books to shelves that already have leaves or pumpkins if she thinks there's space that needs to be filled. She also places books under bowls, picture frames, and other trinkets.

    4. Opt for Classic Color Schemes

While she's tried following fall decor trends in previous years, Welch has found that nothing is quite as cozy and inviting as the classic fall color palette. Last year she tried to replicate a darker, moodier fall look that featured shades of dark purple, but she said people didn't like it as much as what she calls the " Gilmore Girls fall orange."

"I just thought I needed to be doing something new every year, but this year I just stuck to the classic, and I really like it," she says. "It gives off nostalgic, cozy, orangey fall vibes."

    5. Pair Classic Pieces with Unexpected Motifs

One of the ways Welch creates such a unique and creative look is by pairing classic motifs with an unexpected decor element. She explains leaf garlands are a non-negotiable when it comes to fall decor. "I always use leaf garlands," Welch says. "I like to put those everywhere like on shelves, TV stands, windows."

In addition to classic leaves and pumpkins (faux for indoors, real for outside), Welch also gravitates toward mushroom motifs during fall. The pairing adds an unexpected twist while still giving a distinct autumn aesthetic.
