Higher Hope Church serves free chicken dinners

BIG FLATS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Higher Hope Church in Big Flats served 750 chicken dinners for the community at its annual free BBQ chicken dinner. The event takes place once a year in July and is open to the public.

More than seventy people volunteered to serve the chicken dinners with salt potatoes and coleslaw. The church prepared 100 meals for the His United Body Community Church in Elmira and 80 meals for law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and ambulance squads in Steuben and Chemung County.

Other activities at the event included inflatables and cornhole games.

Lisa Arnold who attended the dinner said how, “It’s good to have a good community meal and fellowship with other people.”

“This is amazing. They do this every year, it’s a free event and it’s a lot of fun and great food,” added Helena Hibbard who was at the dinner.

The church began hosting these dinners 10 years ago and was serving up to 250 dinners at the time. According to pastor Adam Hungerford, the church hosts these dinners to reach out to the community at large. Pastor Hungerford also mentioned the church hopes to continue organizing these events and exceed 800 meals at next year’s dinner.
