Abilene man accused of throwing mother dog into dumpster so hard, he kills her indicted

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – An Abilene man accused of throwing a dog into a dumpster so hard, he killed her has been indicted.

Gary Mathews was indicted Thursday on one count of Cruelty to Animals in connection to an incident that took place on the 3300 block of Sherry Lane in April.

Court documents state officers were called to the home to assist animal control and when they arrived, Mathews handed them a newborn puppy.

When asked where the puppy’s mother was, the documents state Mathews told officers he killed her by throwing her into a dumpster.

Officers found the dog deceased in the dumpster and the documents state they noticed, “blood on some of the trash that looked like spatter caused by the dog being thrown with a large amount of force.”

The documents state Mathews claimed he threw the dog in the dumpster because she had bitten someone and he also said she was alive and uninjured before he threw her.

Officers interviewed nearby residents, and the documents state one reported “Mathews had also killed several puppies”.

There was also fresh blood in Mathews apartment when officers went with a friend to retrieve his wallet, according to the documents.

Mathews was released from jail after posting a $15,000 bond.
