“We want to win a gold ball”, Merkel Football ready to win under Wes Wood

MERKEL, Texas ( BCH Sports ) – Over in the Windmill City, there’s a new head coach in town, and his name is Wes Wood.

After their first winning season since 2017, Merkel decided to go in a different direction, and named Wood as their Head Coach and Athletic Director.

Wes was the coach at Snyder, where he led the Tigers to the playoffs in 3 out of 5 seasons.

It won’t be an easy path for the Badgers to do that this season…they’ll be going against state title contending teams like Albany and Hawley.

However, Wes believes that as long as the team controls what they can, the wins will fall in line.

Wood said, “Everybody has their ceiling and everybody is supposed to try to reach that ceiling. Our kids are working their absolute hardest, giving me their best efforts, and that’s all we can ask for. The results take care of themselves. If you look at a little bit more finite goals and stuff like that, then, we want to we want to win a gold ball. Whether that’s a championship or by a district championship. We want to get that team picture hung in the wall.”

Time will tell as to how good the Badgers will be under Wes Wood.

They open up the season at home vs. Ballinger on August 30th.
