ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – If you see flames in southwest Abilene, don’t be alarmed! It’s probably just Atmos Energy flaring natural gas.

The flaring will take place at an Atmos property on the 1600 block of Corsicana Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. August 20 through August 26.

Atmos does flaring as part of their routine maintenance, which means they burn natural gas to safely remove it.

“This procedure is a necessary, safe, and standard industry practice used to extract natural gas
from an isolated section of pipeline by burning it rather than allowing it to escape directly
into the atmosphere,” a press release explains.

Visible flames and moderate noise will be noticeable during the flaring process.
