    Abilene experiences moderate drought as drought reaches largest extent in Texas since December 2023

    ABILENE, Texas. (KTAB/KRBC) – According to the Texas Water Development Board , Abilene is experiencing moderate drought conditions. Drought in Texas reached its largest extent since December 2023, and an additional 20 percent is vulnerable to drought in the coming weeks.

    August has been hotter and drier than normal for Texas, triggering recent drought expansion. The National Weather Service predicted that we won’t see any improvements any time soon. NWS anticipates drought expansion in Texas through the end of November.

    According to the National Integrated Drought Information System , Taylor County is experiencing a drought of 95.79 percent.

    Lake Abilene is at 6.7 percent full, reaching its lowest point a year ago when it was 21.3 percent. At 7,900 acre-feet, the lake’s conservation storage sits at 533 acre-feet.

    List of lakes as of Aug. 26 affected by drought below

    • Lake Sweetwater is 37.5 percent full with conservation storage of 4,602 acre-feet percent.
    • Fort Phantom Hill Reservoir sits at 61.7% full with a conservation storage of 43,243.
    • Lake Stamford remains almost complete at 88.7 percent full, with a conservation storage of 45,744.
    • Hubbard Creek Reservoir is at 44.8 percent with a conservation storage of 140,370 acre-feet.
    • Oak Creek Reservoir is at 27.3 percent full with conservation at 10,702 acre-feet.
    • O.C. Fisher Lake in San Angelo is in severe drought with a 0.8 percent full.
