BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) — Although portions of the Big Country received some rain in the past couple of days, it was not enough to overcome the current drought situation.

Last week’s drought monitor had most counties north of the I-20 corridor in a Moderate (2/5) Risk category. As for everyone else, it seemed to have been a small toss-up, with counties under both a Dry (1/5) and Moderate (2/5) Risk category.

This week, our conditions worsened severely. Mills County appears to be the only region where a Dry (1/5) Risk is still in effect. In addition, 17 counties across the Big Country have seen the addition of a severe (3/5) Risk. No Extreme (4/5) or Exceptional (5/5) Risks are in effect at this time. While much rain is still needed to improve the drought situation, the small amounts of rainfall over the past few days appeared to be just enough to help improve the fire risk situation. The Texas A&M Forest Service now shows regions within the Big Country under the two smallest risks, Low and Moderate. For more updates regarding fire risks, visit here.

Thankfully, there is an influx of rain chances for the upcoming week. The Big Country can expect consistent rainfall each day for the next seven days.

The graphic above shows what the total rainfall could look like between now and next Wednesday, September 4th. While 5 inches of rain may seem overreactive, this is just one of many different weather models. This rainfall is not guaranteed; it is simply a rough estimate.
