Looking back over the last few years, Labor Days have typically been the last blast of summer with highs in the 90s or 100s and lots of sunshine to go around. Last year, we had one of the hottest Labor Days in five years, with a high of 104 degrees. But, we all remember how scorching it was in the summer of 2023 and how the heat seemed never-ending. Overall, the average tends to land around the mid-90s, making for a great day by the pool.

This year, we’re in for a big change. Temperatures are well below average heading into the new week, and we have a higher chance of rain than in any of the past five years. Let’s dive into what to expect and how to prepare.

In the morning, temperatures at 8 AM are expected to be around 72 degrees with lots of clouds and northeast winds, making it feel brisk. Rain chances are high at about 90%, so if you have errands or a morning workout planned, don’t forget that rain gear!

By early afternoon, as some tend to start prepping the grill, temperatures will slowly climb to around 76 degrees, so not much of a change from the morning. The cool air will persist with northeast winds gusting up to 20 MPH. So, if you’re grilling, try to do it in a shaded area as the rain chances stick around, and be cautious of the gusty winds around any type of fire.

At the peak of our day, temperatures won’t rise much due to mostly cloudy skies and enhanced rain chances. The gusty winds will continue into the late afternoon, so if you’re out as the sun sets, a light jacket is not a bad idea as it cools down for the night.

Overall, expect a wet and cooler-than-normal Labor Day. If you’re looking for an excuse to stay inside and relax, this is it! Have a wonderful and relaxing day, and stay weather-aware if you’re heading out.

One last thing to note is the Flood Watch that is Issued for the listed counties: Nolan, Taylor, Callahan, Coke, Runnels, Coleman, and Brown. This will last until 7:00 PM Tuesday as the excessive rain continues leading to potential flooding in low lying areas or areas where there is excessive runoff build up. One thing to remember if you plan on travelling where there is the potential for flooding is TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN! Stay safe and enjoy your day off Big Country!
