BIG COUNTRY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — The intense heat seems to have settled down across the Big Country. In addition, the rainfall that we have seen recently, although it has not been much, has helped our drought situation. While this seems too good to be true, will this week uphold last week’s conditions?

Fair Folklore: Is there truth to the saying, ‘It always rains when the fair comes to town?’

In simple terms, yes, the next seven days will be more pleasant than the past month. Temperatures are not expected to hit anywhere near the triple-digit mark, and there is still a minor chance for showers as a small frontal boundary progresses through most of our counties sometime Sunday.

Looking closer, we must first analyze this frontal boundary. Is there an overarching reason behind the few warm and dry days ahead?

Allow me to introduce you to the term ‘Omega Block.’ This term describes a specific weather pattern in which an area of high pressure aloft is surrounded on either side by areas of low pressure. The name, of course, is because this pattern takes on the same shape as the Greek letter Ω omega.

Minor improvements this week for the Big Country drought situation

While this weather pattern is in effect, the Big Country can expect fair weather and warmer temperatures for the next 3-4 days. This is due to the high-pressure system aloft. Any rain chances and frontal boundary in the forecast will be a result of the low-pressure system currently located to the west of us. These changes will occur in the next 3-4 days when the weather pattern shifts eastward.

Be sure to stay tuned for an update regarding the U.S. Drought Monitor. Those updates take place on Thursdays, and you can find them here. Enjoy the rest of your week!
