ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – Six undercover Abilene police officers who assisted in rescuing a kidnapped baby earlier this year have been recognized for their “heroic actions.”

FBI Dallas agents came to Abilene Friday to present the officers with FBI Director Certificates in connection to the arrest of a homicide suspect and successful rescue of a kidnapped infant in Abilene.

The FBI contacted Abilene PD the evening of May 5 after learning murder suspect Alek Collins may have been hiding inside an Abilene home after fleeing the scene of a double homicide and kidnapping in Clovis, New Mexico .

Officers immediately jumped into action, helping with surveillance overnight before completing a successful but risky rescue and arrest after Collins left the residence with the kidnapped baby and attempted to flee.

“At great risk to themselves, the officers converged on the suspect and placed him under arrest. The infant was rescued from the vehicle and reunited with family members,” a press release from the FBI explains.

All officers involved in the rescue were awarded during a private ceremony at APD headquarters.

“Congratulations to each officer for their tremendous accomplishments during this difficult and dangerous investigation and the work you do each day to uphold your oaths of office,” Assistant Special Agent in Charge McGuire proclaimed.
