ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The City of Abilene has decided to temporarily stop putting fluoride in the water in response to a recent ruling on its safety.

A federal court in California ruled earlier this month that the Environmental Protection Agency must address potential health risks caused by fluoride, which may cause the agency to issue new guidelines for fluoride levels in public drinking water supplies.

City Manager Robert Hanna and Mayor Weldon Hurt recently met and decided that a temporary suspension of fluoridation of Abilene’s water supply was the best response to the ruling and will do “no harm” until they can discuss the matter with the public.

This temporary suspension began Monday, September 30.

Abilene’s water had a fluoride level of 0.7 parts per million, which is the level recommended by the American Dental Association for improving public dental health.

Council members will discuss the City of Abilene’s water fluoridation practices during their upcoming meeting Thursday, October 3.

No further information is available at this time.
