ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — Does your house have plumbing in it that can leach lead into your drinking water? The City of Abilene has spent more than a year identifying those houses that do, and now you can look up your house on an interactive map.

In December 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced the Revised Lead and Copper Rule to strengthen regulations on lead in drinking water. One requirement is for utilities to publicly disclose an inventory of city-owned and customer-owned service lines by October 2024.

Beginning in 2022, water utility staff began reviewing historical records to determine the installation and build dates of current infrastructure and homes. Homes built after 1988 were considered non-lead due to the city ordinance.

Visual inspections have been conducted on the remaining connection points. The City of Abilene has confirmed that it does not have any leads in its inventory of service lines. However, you may want to check where the city lines connect to your home. Click here to check the status of your service line .
